University Staff Description University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Department: Office of Laboratory Animal Research (OLAR) Working Title: Veterinary Technician II Position #: 00740384 - Requisition #: 34732 Job Summary: Provide routine and specialized care for a wide variety of species of large and small laboratory animals which are used by scientists for biomedical research and education in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus.

Key Responsibilities: Duties:

Import/Export Duties Perform first line communication with researchers, couriers, and other institutions to facilitate import and export of animals.
Work closely with the veterinary staff to ensure appropriate documentation is acquired and approved for imports and exports.
Manage the care, testing, and release of animals in quarantine Complete all necessary paperwork pertaining to the shipping, receiving and quarantine of animals.
Ensure all animals being imported and exported are properly identified/labeled.
Utilize spreadsheets and database to track import/export progress General Vet Tech II Duties:

Serve as a lead Veterinary Technician position, ensuring the duties of the Veterinary Technician Is are completed on a daily basis.
Consults with research personnel to accommodate any investigator needs such as: scheduling use of procedure rooms to research personnel; reserving of equipment needed by research personnel (anesthesia table, scales, etc.
); providing technical services upon request of research personnel examples include: individualized training sessions; assistance with anesthesia (induction and monitoring); organ, blood and tissue collection; administering experimental agents; animal euthanasia; collection of postmortem tissues for evaluation; surgical assistance; etc.].
Create charge sheets for support provided to research personnel.
Perform diagnostic laboratory evaluations and tests in the areas of hematology, parasitology, serology, microbiology, cytology, and clinical pathology.
Perform proper techniques for: sample collection, handling of diagnostic samples and equipment (examples include: parasitology sample collection and evaluation; serology sample collection and shipment to various diagnostic laboratories; creating diagnostic reports; filing of all diagnostic related paperwork; and the "Sentinel" program) of the work unit.
Create diagnostic records and billing for appropriate tech time spent on diagnostic services.
Monitor and perform all diagnostic testing involved in the transfer of animals between facilities or rooms within OLAR facilities.
Consult with a veterinarian regarding treatments and euthanasia and perform treatments as prescribed.
Make judgments about treating animals without permission (from the investigator) in an "emergency" situation or after communication attempts (with the investigator) have been repeatedly unsuccessful while working under the authority of a veterinarian.
Mentor/train others regarding all aspects of this position and provides input into areas covered by performance plans and provides feedback to supervisors for them to prepare evaluations.
Monitor the progress of the assigned work area by ensuring that all SOPs are being followed, assigns and adjusts coverage for their assigned area to accommodate employee absences.
Recommend additional staff coverage in OLAR.
Recommend more efficient procedures (animal and technical) when possible.
Work effectively with research personnel to communicate tasks such as training, purchasing and returning of drugs, injuries to or sickness of their animals, etc.
Help schedule and coordinate to ensure that everything at one facility gets done on the correct day.
On occasion may be required to drive a university vehicle. Work Location: Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: * An associate's degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology.

* Two years of experience caring for, feeding, or providing health care for animals in a veterinary laboratory, breeding, or boarding facility.

* Veterinary technician license or provisional registration with Colorado Department of Regulatory Affairs (DORA).


o Veterinary technician students, new graduates, or others who intend to acquire licensure in the 1st year of employment are eligible as well.
If unlicensed, the applicant will be brought in as a veterinarian technician assistant and moved to a veterinary technician I when licensure is acquired.


Substitution: To substitute the associate's degree and veterinary technician license requirements, there are two provisional registration pathways through DORA.


o At least 6500 hours of work experience performing the duties of a veterinary technician in the 7 years prior to the application submission date

o Pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE)

* If you have already passed the VTNE, your credential will be approved with your work experience.


* If you haven't passed the VTNE yet, you will have an 18-month window after the submission/approval of your work experience to successfully pass the test and secure your credential.

OR o At least 9000 hours of work experience performing the duties of a veterinary technician in the 7 years before the application submission date

Preferred Qualifications: * Current certification with the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

* Experience performing initial evaluations and physicals on large animals.

* Experience working in an animal research facility.


* Experience creating electronic spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel and managing electronic veterinary records

* Experience ordering, tracking and maintaining biomedical research equipment

Conditions of Employment * Must be willing and able to frequently lift and carry 50 lbs

* Must be willing and able to euthanize large and small animals

* Must be willing and able to sit, stand, walk and reach above shoulders on a constant basis

* Must be willing able to work around noise and vibrations

* Must be willing and able to work straight or rotating shifts, weekends and holidays

* Must be willing and able to work around hazardous chemicals

* Must possess and maintain a current State of Colorado Driver's License

* Must be willing and able to wear appropriate respiratory protection


NOTE: This position has been designated as essential personnel, "Subject to call 24 hours per day, seven days per week" and may be required to carry a pager.
Position may also be required to "Stay over late" or "Come in early" to "Cover" shifts, as needed and may be required to respond to any emergencies as needed.
If hired, you will be required to provide effective off-hours phone contact info for emergency call-in purposes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Supervision is limited so the candidate must be able to think independently and have continuous and focused attention to detail.


* Data entry skills, working knowledge of computer operating systems including spreadsheet or database management software are required.


* Ability to communicate with various individuals from PIs to shipping companies to animal care technicians
