Kilimo is seeking a Senior Data Scientist/Data Engineer with expertise in data analysis, machine learning, and data engineering, specifically in climate and agricultural domains. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, experience working with environmental and agricultural datasets, and a passion for applying data science to real-world challenges in these fields. Key Responsibilities Data Science Analyze complex datasets from climate, weather, and agricultural sources to derive actionable insights. Develop and validate machine learning models to solve problems like crop yield prediction, water usage optimization, and climate risk assessment. Conduct statistical analyses to support decision-making in sustainable agriculture and resource management. Build and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines for processing large volumes of climate and agricultural data. Design data architectures to efficiently store, query, and analyze structured and unstructured datasets. Ensure data quality and consistency through validation, cleaning, and transformation processes. Domain-Specific Focus Leverage domain knowledge to understand and interpret agricultural and climate data, including satellite imagery, soil data, and irrigation metrics. Collaborate with domain experts to design tailored solutions for challenges in climate-smart agriculture. Research and Development Stay updated on the latest advancements in climate and agricultural data science techniques and tools. Experiment with innovative approaches to improve model accuracy and robustness for agro-climatic applications. Technical Skills 5+ years of experience in Data Science or Data Engineering roles. Proficiency in Python and its data science libraries (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn). Familiarity with GIS tools and libraries (e.g., QGIS, rasterio, geopandas). Experience with machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch) and statistical modeling. Proficiency in SQL and working knowledge of NoSQL databases. Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure). Domain Expertise Knowledge of climate science, agronomy, or related fields. Familiarity with datasets such as satellite imagery, weather data, or agricultural production data. Understanding of irrigation systems, crop modeling, and environmental sustainability metrics is a plus. Educational Background Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Agronomy, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in climate science, data science, or machine learning are highly valued. Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills Proven ability to handle complex datasets and solve domain-specific problems efficiently. Strong focus on actionable results to support agricultural and environmental objectives. Preferred Skills Experience working with remote sensing data and satellite imagery. Knowledge of agro-meteorological modeling or hydrological modeling techniques. Proficiency in big data frameworks (e.g., Spark) is a plus.
