Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education, the Director of First and Second-Year Advisors is responsible for managing and strategically leading a team of academic counselors working in the Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) at San Francisco State University. The center is a unit within the Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning (DUEAP). DUEAP is comprised of several units that collaborate to serve students and enhance learning. The director works closely with other advising mangers and DUEAP's leadership to deliver a quality advising experience for SF State students.
Working within the UAC, the first and second-year advisors provide comprehensive academic counseling to a caseload of first and second-year students and undeclared students, assisting them in achieving their academic, personal and career goals. The team employs a holistic and proactive approach to advising for the first two years and assists students with exploring and declaring majors/minors, identifying their strengths and interests, and overcoming academic and personal challenges. In addition, the first and second-year advisors help students understand SF State's graduation requirements and university policies and procedures. They encourage self-advocacy, and promotes academic success, timely graduation, and a lifetime of learning.
The director manages a team of up to 16 staff members, implementing a team approach towards delivering developmental advising and academic counseling with a focus on student success for first and second-year and undeclared students. This philosophy involves a collaborative management style focused on relationship building with team members, other advising managers, and campus constituents. The director works with staff to further the mission and vision of the center in alignment with both the mission of San Francisco State University and the mission of the Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning.
Position Information
Strategic Planning/Leadership
Work closely with DUEAP leadership to facilitate comprehensive academic advising efforts on campus, improving the delivery of advising services while focusing on retention, student success, and graduation, specifically for first-year, second-year, and undeclared students.
Work in partnership with DUEAP leadership to support the successful implementation of a grant using predictive analytics, data and technology to proactively advise students and improve San Francisco State University's retention and graduation rates.? Deliver a student-centered, case loading model that is consistent with the philosophy and policies of the center, the Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning, and San Francisco State University.
Work with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and staff to set annual goals for their team and for the larger UAC and develop strategies for reaching these goals.
Assess the needs of staff and advocate for resources to support them in carrying out their duties and responsibilities to the best of their ability.
Work with the Office of New Student and Family Programs to deliver academic advising services to first-time freshmen at summer and winter orientations.
Represent the center and DUEAP as directed or appropriate on campus-wide committees and work groups.
Participate in initiatives focused on student success, facilitating graduation, and improving academic advising, specifically for first-year, second-year, and undeclared students.
Work with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and the Director of Advisor Development and College Advisors to develop training for professional staff.
Assist in the development and implementation of online and print advising resources and tools.
Creatively market the center's services to first-year, second-year, and undeclared students and the campus community, promoting the importance of seeking advising and understanding pathways to graduation.
Design and implement an ongoing assessment plan of their team's services and programs in order to provide continual improvement towards meeting the campus advising goals.
Understand best practices in the field of academic advising for first-year, second-year, and undeclared students to ensure the delivery of relevant and developmentally appropriate student support services.

Management/Staffing/Supervision/Training
Manage a dedicated team of up to 16 staff, including two Student Service Professional IVs and fourteen Student Service Professional IIIs.
Support staff in delivering a range of advising services that include: one-on-one advising, drop-in advising, workshops, and advising events.
Responsible for all operational aspects of their advising team including but not limited to the administration of day-to-day functions, staff scheduling, supervision, training, project management, and event planning.
Manage job responsibilities and duties for staff, reviewing progress and areas for improvement, completing annual performance evaluations, and addressing staff questions and concerns.
Strengthen the advising team by identifying, hiring, and training new talent.
Motivate, inform, and retain existing staff by offering on-going professional development opportunities both in-house and through participation in professional organizations.
Work with staff to collaboratively identify annual professional goals and areas of improvement; provide on-going supervision and support to assist in the attainment of mutually agreed upon goals.
Ensure that staff offer outstanding student support in a welcoming, customer-service oriented environment.
Assist staff in providing student-centered, solution-focused crisis management for complex student advising situations.
Assess current advisor training resources and create necessary programs for onboarding advisors that include but are not limited to supporting first and second-year and undeclared students, major/minor pathways, and appropriate course selection for all academic programs.
Provide expertise and support to staff regarding complex advising policies and student advising situations.

Communication/Partnerships
Maintain excellent relationships with university constituencies, including administrative support services, colleges, schools, departments, and individual faculty to optimize the delivery of the advising services.? Develop cross-departmental relationships in order to foster an SF State culture that values, celebrates, and supports first-year, second-year, and undeclared students.
Work closely with Strategic Marketing and Communications, New Student and Family Programs, the First-Year Experience Faculty Director, and the First-Year Experience Manager, to market and communicate advising-specific information to first-year freshmen.
Partner with DUEAP advising managers to ensure students are receiving accurate and timely major-specific advising information.
Collaborate with the Directors of College Advising and the college advising teams to ensure a seamless transition of advising support for students after their second year.
Clearly communicate the mission, vision, and goals of the UAC and the first and second-year advising team to campus constituents.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's or terminal degree in counseling, higher education, student affairs, or a closely related discipline.
Five years progressively responsible experience in coordination, administration, and leading academic support or academic advising services.
Experience in hiring, supervising, effectively working with, and retaining a diverse set of staff.
Experience with and sensitivity to developing and delivering advising and student support services that meet the needs of a highly diverse, urban student population.
Experience working with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop and deliver effective advising and student support programs/services.
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a complex campus advising system where there are numerous constituents and stakeholders requiring accurate and timely communication of advising-related information.
Knowledge of student development and counseling theory and its application to academic counseling and student support services.
Ability to interpret complex academic policies and apply them to individual student cases in an equitable and compassionate manner.

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to be a creative leader who draws on the knowledge and strengths of the team to develop and advance the vision, mission, and goals of the center.
Experience managing professional staff in a higher education environment, preferably one that is unionized.
Experience managing a budget.
Practical and theoretical knowledge of how students' academic skills development is affected by their cognitive and behavioral strengths and challenges.
Experience in conflict resolution at the informal and formal levels.
Knowledge of the California State University (CSU) System and its policies and procedures.
Experience using PeopleSoft – Campus Solutions, Educational Advisory Board (EAB), and advising-related software.
