Last Epoch review: Laptop and desktop benchmarks A competitor to Diablo 4. After Palworld, Enshrouded and Helldivers 2, it is now time for another game to steal the hearts of the Steam community. We have tested whether the action-role-playing game requires a powerful computer or not.

TechIf the reviews so far are anything to go by,Diablo 4 may have to ready itself for a fight. Last Epoch from developer Eleventh Hour Games is based on the original in many respects, but it also does some things differently—or even better at times.

The underlying Unity Engine delivers good to very good visuals. The environments have been designed with great attention to detail and offer not only dense vegetation but also crisp textures. Its play between light and shadows as well as the game's effects are also impressive. In addition, it can be controlled smoothly and nicely.

Its graphics menu is particularly impressive, but you may have to scroll quite a bit. While the top section lets you control the total quality (there are 6 presets), picture mode and resolution, the advanced settings offer more than 10 individual controls to play about with.

The game supports FXAA, SMAA and TAA edge smoothing. You can also optionally activate Vsync and an FPS limit. Great: All changes are applied without having to restart the game. The fact that the developers have done without upscaling in the form of DLSS and FSR is bearable due to the game's moderate requirements.

Its stability leaves a little more to be desired. On AMD systems, in particular, we experienced the odd crash during the testing period. The fact that Last Epoch opens in a small window the first time and that certain menu actions (e.g. returning to the main screen) sometimes cause it to lag is also less than ideal.

We used the beginning of the game for our speed measurements. Using the CapFrameX tool, we recorded the frame rate for just under 20 seconds along a fixed track. As this is a bird's-eye-view game, an average of 30fps should theoretically be sufficient, although more frames per second are of course recommended for action-packed battles.

ResultsFHD (1,920 x 1,080)iGPUs are only sufficient for low resolutions and settings. Still, aRadeon 780M manages 40fps at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and the preset Low. Current mid-range models, on the other hand, manage Full HD even with maximum settings.

QHD (2,560 x 1,440)QHD displays don't yet require a high-end component, either. Starting with a GeForce RTX 4050 , 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and the Ultra preset runs smoothly.

UHD (3,840 x 2,160)The game only becomes reasonably demanding in 4K. With a combination of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and full details, more than 30fps is possible with aGeForce RTX 4060 or better.

5 Stutters – This game is very likely to stutter and have poor frame rates. Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, average frame rates are expected to fall below 25fps
May Stutter – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game. Based on interpolated information from surrounding graphics cards of similar performance levels, stutters and poor frame rates are expected.
30 Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 25fps
40 Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 35fps
60 Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 58fps
May Run Fluently – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game. Based on interpolated information from surrounding graphics cards of similar performance levels, fluent frame rates are expected.
? Uncertain – This graphics card experienced unexpected performance issues during testing for this game. A slower card may be able to achieve better and more consistent frame rates than this particular GPU running the same benchmark scene.
Uncertain – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game and no reliable interpolation can be made based on the performances of surrounding cards of the same class or family.

I discovered my interest in computers in my childhood, growing up with MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 in the early 1990s. I was especially fascinated with computer games, even from an early age. From Monkey Island through Lands of Lore to Doom, I tried every game I could get my hands on. I have been working for Notebookcheck since 2009 with my focus mostly being on high-performance gaming laptops.

Originally from Scotland, I grew up and lived in Germany until I completed my high school qualifications before moving back to Scotland to complete my university studies. Growing up bilingual led me to form a close relationship with the English and German languages, often working in the fields of teaching and translation. Most of my childhood was shaped by playing around on new consoles, computers and gadgets and getting to grips with the new craze of the internet and smartphones. This interest has stayed with me well into adulthood. Nowadays, I live in Glasgow and work as a freelance translator and digital media coordinator. I have been translating for Notebookcheck since early 2023.
